2 Weeks and Counting!!!

Okay, so since I'd decided to go back to teaching full-time, It became clear to me early during the school year that making hair clippies, monsters and Sweet and Sinister dolls was not going to happen if I wanted to be successful at either career. SO! My official last day of school was yesterday which starts the 2 week countdown to the summer opening of my Etsy Shop!! Custom orders will still be available and for those of you in the Columbus area, I will still have my work available at Wholly Craft!

I will also be debuting my new hand knitted owls, line of fingerpuppets (Digit Midgits), and Eye-Patch Pretty dolls!

Visit again soon!! And for all you other teachers out there... have a happy relaxing summer!

So with our recent move to Florida comes weeks of packing.... BOOOO! I know that there are many people that would agree with me when I say packing is one of the most painful processes EVER! So in the three weeks of taking the time to label and sort items into their appropriate boxes I realized that our apartment looks the same as it ever did and no matter how many things I throw away and get rid of ... it never ends!! AAAHH! Here are some of the ridiculous things I have accumulated in the past two years that I am now getting rid of some how!!

So those of you that have known me for a while, know that my true passion lies in Ceramics. I love the feel of cold clay and opening up that kiln after a glaze fire!! I was fortunate enough to take care of Open Studios at the Arts Castle and to have some nice quiet time make some stuff for myself and others of course. This is definitely a work in progress so these items are not glazed. They should be finished in the next few weeks. Enjoy!!

CTA Craftstravaganza!! Yay!

So this past Sunday was the Columbus Torah Academy Craftstravaganza! So fun! For most of us this event started the 2009 season, so it was a nice way for us fellow artists to hang out, check out this years new creations, and transition back into selling mode! Spacedog studios is responsible for this recycled number! Filled with fun papers and great colors, Sarah can really put together a OOAK high-quality product that felt like it was made just for me! I love it!

So, if any of you have kids (or not), you may find this humorous (or completely frustrating)! So as I was on my way to the Ceramics Lab at the Arts Castle, I received a phone call from my husband. When I answered, he asks me about Sharpie Paint Markers. Weird, right? He never asks about arts supplies! So as I go into depth about the pros and cons of this permanent media, he cuts me off to rephrase his question. What he meant to say was... How would one, remove Sharpie paint markers from skin, clothes, and laptops. Yikes.

After work I came home and asked my daughter what she did that day. She answered proudly, " I did this! " and points to my laptop. I asked her to describe what she had drawn, and still, after 3 weeks she has consistently described her laptop cover creation!

Blue lines, a tree, a chichayay (that means chicken) and toast.

...I gotta say... not bad for a 23 month old. Enjoy!

A Pair of Ducks

So today was the second session of my art enrichment class at the Arts Castle, in Delaware.! The Theme: Things that grow. The Book: Growing Like Me by Anne Rockwell. The Project: A sculptural piece, of an animal ( the baby and adult stage). Today I only had 2 kids but their projects turned out amazing!! We reviewed free-form/ Organic and geometric shapes then created a sculpture in the animal of their choice, which coincidently were Ducks. The boys learned how to mix colors with model magic but the rest of the project was left to their imaginations! Good work Guys!!

So in my attempt to fill some consignment orders and create some new designs, I came across a drawing I made a month ago. I decided to make it into a hair clip and just fell in love! So now i'm making a ton of them. And the great thing is that I can make them into hair clippies or take the clip out and make it into an iron on patch! So here are some pics!! New online shop to open next month

I know, I know... I keep putting it off and now I changed the whole concept of what I wanted! I was originally going to open a recycled goods shop, complete with notebooks and tote bags all made of recycled materials. So as I was researching and making models for this shop, it dawned on me that I missed my sewing machine. Then my husband's cousin had another baby and I just can't resist making things for teeny tinies, esp. now that I have another one on the way! So I went shopping for fabric and played with some ideas in my head and I made a simple baby blanket, bib, and rattle set. I thoroughly enjoyed it and loved the final product!! So! I opened a new shop called Mini Giggles on Etsy! It will officially open next month!

And if you are a fan of my signature monsters, do not worry. That shop will always be taken care of and will always be updated! It is, after all, my first shop! A lot of love and hardwork went into selling my original line of creatures!

During my visit in Cleveland for the Bazaar Bizarre Festival, I received a custom order for a Sweet Doll (from the Sweet and Sinister Doll Collection) . Personally I'm amazed that I only have a few left. I played with idea of these dolls when the book Coraline came out in 2002 and when I watched the Dopplegangland episode of BUFFY the vampire slayer. Since those experiences I have been trying to perfect these lovely/scary little girlies. So here is the latest one. Her name is Sabrina. I think I'll try to may a series of mermaids next..

Okay so I finally finished a model for my higher end stuffed animals. I don't think this draft is the final draft but it certainly gets me closer to what I'm looking for in the new line. I also attached a model of one of my recycled handmade books. Every on it, besides the glue, is scrap from something. I have more coming soon!! I hope you all are having a good week! Stay tuned!

Okay so here are a few pics of some work that did while I was watching Mirrormask. It quite inspirational, if you like that kind of stuff. I was working on some landscapes that I could incorporate in my continued attempt at a children's book. Oh, one day.

Random thought of the month

Okay so every once and a while I just have to comment on the ridiculousness that I observe everyday. Sometimes I play the lead role in this "ridiculousness" and sometimes, if I'm lucky, I can catch it from a distance.

Sunday I was at the mall with my mini me, and we were having our usual Sbarro's pizza. My husband was in line for food so it was just me and the bean at the table. I notice a very cold and sophisticated couple walking toward us. I was focused on the woman because she was wearing this stunning white peacoat . So without a thought I turned to
my daughter who demanded more pizza crust ...yadda,blah, blah. When I looked up, the woman I had noticed moments earlier was standing in front of the Chik-fil-a (which was closed - bcs it was sun.) looking as emotionless and harsh as ever and I realized the reason she was standing there was because her husband was taking a photograph of her in front of the closed restaurant. I mean, really taking a photo! He was standing there so long you would have thought he switched to his manual settings on his camera and was adjusting the shutter speed.
Once he took the picture he put the camera in his pocket and met the white peacoat and continued walking through the food court. No other pictures were taken.

This situation has consumed my mind!!! What were they doing!!??? That is so weird!! And everytime I think I am over thinking about it... I'll see a damn chick-fil -a and start thinking of stories about this couple.

Today they are hoity-toity robots from the future on a birthday party scavenger hunt.

It's a Girl!!

So! As you all know we will be having a baby in May and just found out that it is another Girl!!!
My poor husband!!
We will name her Coraline or Coralyne after one of my favorite books by my favorite writer Neil
Gaiman!
Unfortunately, the movie Coraline will be coming out in Feb. IN 3-D baby!! I just hope it doesn't do SO well that Cora has a bunch of Coraline's in her graduating class.

So! Since I've announced that I will be opening up a new handmade bookshop soon, I should show some of my work up to this point.

Here is my book entitled: Purpose
It was made to practice illuminated letters and simple bookbinding techniques. I was teaching that class at the time and wanted to have a good professional looking model. I call this piece Purpose because each page displays an illuminated letter in the word PURPOSE and also uses symbols for different religions as background patterns. The construction was done in a star binding technique with mulberry paper and recycled leather. Each letter was hand painted with watercolor, gouach, and gold drawing ink.

Finding some down time!

Well the craziness of the holidays have finally settled! And now... since I don't have anything major happening in next few months and other scheduled commitments have been canceled, I will be taking the opportunity to design a new fleece monster and create a line of high-end plush. I have also decided that since I have this time I will be opening a new handmade bookshop which will feature many books, stationary, pencils, etc made from recycled items. I figure that since i have so much experience in bookmaking and teaching bookmaking and calligraphy, that why not give it a try, I obviously love it! So wish me luck!!

Now! I was going through my recent artwork/sketches and decided that I would share! Since I don't have any current projects to show maybe I could give you an idea of what I do when I'm not making monsters and books!!!

The following drawings are done in colored pencil. The first two were inspired by the nerves and cells of the body. I think it was a few weeks after the bodies exhibit in Tampa. I thoroughly love science and find it as beautiful as any painting. The next drawing was a simple still life I made when I thought about going to grad school at SCAD . It focuses on a daruma doll that I have had for years. A year and a half before my daughter was born I made a wish (hence the 1 black eye) and completely forgot what I even wished for. Which, if you know me, is typical. Then it wasn't until I was 6 months pregnant that I remembered that I wished to be pregnant and start a happy healthy family. And that wish could not have been more true. So in my waiting for my daughter to be born I made this still life so I wouldn't forget again.

Hello Hello!!!
I hope that everyone had a great, great, turkey/tofurkey day!!! We have been quite busy in the Harvey household! It is always nice to spend time with family for the holidays! Of course spending time with my family consists of a hodge podge of filipino food and a sad attempt at "traditional" thanksgiving food. Ah, Sam's club makes quite a turkey. Instead of sitting around a large table discussing our lives to one another we pile the food on to paper plates in buffet manner and position ourselves throughout the house. That way we can talk to everyone, mingle and lock in our turn to play ROCK BAND 2. Which is a sweet game by the way!!
The festivities finally end around 2:00am... which is early for us, and head off to our homes only to meet up again the next day to do it all over again. I love it. Everyone's Thanksgiving should work this way!!

So now back to business!!

I will also have work in the C-Note Show at Junctionview Studios on Dec 13th . I will have the following paintings for sale. If you don't know about C-Note it is an art show were everything is $100. Please check out the site for pictures of the work that will available.!

Hello Hello!! So I am currently in the the middle of my Kids Creation sessions at the Arts Castle and I had to share our shaving cream and liquid watercolor ocean project! I read the kids a book of poems about the ocean to reference water creatures, plants and movement.

I was so pleasantly surprised that not only did my students follow directions ( which is hard when there is shaving cream all over their hands ) , but they also came up with incredible stories about their drawings!

They also seemed to take the time to think about color choices and the layout of their pieces!

I am so proud of them!!

Via Colori before the Storm

So if you are not from the Columbus area you probably never heard that a wind storm on Sunday September 14th put thousands upon thousands of us without power. And with the devastation in Texas and other states, all of our AEP guys/gals were there, so Columbus and surrounding areas were without power for at least 3 days and some are still waiting. I was one of the fortunate ones that didn't even see the lights flicker. But I did watch all the aluminum siding and shingles fly by our windows. Since no one saw this crazy wind coming, life ran as it normally would that weekend.

So the family and I went to Via Colori a 2-day street painting festival that raises funds for non- profit organizations. Here are some pics of the first day of the festival when the biggest problem was finishing and taking a picture of their work before it started to rain. Little did they know what Sunday's weather would bring.

I do have to say, it was a pleasant time!! The artist were spread out nicely, there was a nice flow of traffic between people, strollers, and pets...I just wish they didn't have to compete with the weather

so much. Makes me excited for next year. I 'd definitely love to participate.

And if a Via Colori festival comes to your town, make sure you visit. It's for a good cause.

It's my BAG, BABY!!!

Okay! So yet again it was one of those days and I had this undying urge to go to SEW to SPEAK and get some fabric and make something! I walked in knowing that I was not leaving until I had a project to do. So I picked what I thought was the hardest project for me to tackle... The Amy Butler Weekender Bag. I love this bag, I had to have this bag, I would have paid for someone to make me this bag. But not today.... oh no .... today I was going to challenge myself and go completely outside of my comfort zone and follow directions and follow a pattern and measure things!!

So here it is!! My very first bag with a zipper and pockets and piping!! TA-DA!!

But don't look inside... it's a mess in there. - that's for another day.

A lesson on Line and Movement

Hello!! So as most of you know, when I'm not raising my mini- me monster or designing and constructing monsters, I teach a few classes at the Arts Castle in Delaware, Ohio. If you've never been, you should go. It's lovely.

The class that is showcased today is my Kids Creations Class B. They range from 3-6 years old and are just super sweet!! Today we had our first class and talked about the importance of line. The kids made foil and yarn drawings where they "focused" on line, as opposed to color or shapes.

Oliver (top, in blue) calls this piece, Mountains.

This Squid creature was created by Patrig.

The students looked at a book about the importance of line, physically drew in the air, which prepared them for this project . They then used yarn and glue on foam core to "draw". A piece of foil was placed shiney side down and pressed/burnished with fingers til yarn was well defined.

This work is by SEAN, he tells me that this is his, DESIGN

Briona is the artist of this ROAD painting!!

Black Acrylic paint was added and lightly brushed off to define foil texture and yarn lines. Then colored acrylic paint was used to add details or an extra design element. I thought the kids did a great job and it was impressive to see them really think about how they laid down their lines and how they entitled their work!!

Okay.. So I LOVE MOBILES!!!

And I was visiting one of my favorite sites, Threadbangers.com and somehow found a link which lead to another link, which led to a blog, which lead to a flickr account, yadda yadda ... and I find this picture!! And I'm pretty sure that along the way I was congratulated for winning a new ipod, 3 times!.... stupid advertisements.
Anyway!! I just fell in love with it and immediately started to think about how I was going to make it and then I saw that there was a pattern for the birds and then I wondered how many I could make, and maybe I could do a ton of different birds, then I thought, SHOOT, I could make a ton of different animals ... maybe snakes... my mind was out of control. Then I began to think about what the whole room would look like with these cute little mobiles! AND! that's where I came up with the formula: One Mobile = cute. 2 Or more mobiles = creepy. Isn't it so true!! I'm a great mathematician. :)

Safe and Secure finally!!

Okay, first off I would like to say that before my daughter was born I worked on 3 different projects to make the ultimate baby blanket. First, I knitted it. - wow, was that terrible. Then I crocheted it and that turned out nice but I forgot that the yarn was 100% wool and stuck it in the washer and dryer. So that turned into the thickest- fanciest- felt changing pad ever. Then I attempted to quilt a blanket ...and let's just say that that piece is still in the babies closet - partly because it's not finished and partly because it's embarrassed to come out.
SO, I found some scrap fabric at Joann fabrics and Ellie just fell in love with it. She was rubbing it on her face and telling me to give it kisses so I knew I had to get it... But what to do with it? Then I thought, "Lenny, you should just suck it up and try to make another blanket. " So I asked around and gathered advice from different sources and this is what I came up with!!! So Simple!! it only took me an hour!! And Ellie loves it so much that she sleeps with it every night!!

So in search of the most perfect gift for my best friend, Niki, I found this fantastic book called "WRECK THIS JOURNAL". Shown above. As I flipped through the book I found myself wanting to destroy pages and glue them back together or (my personal fave) drawing with a lock of hair. Gross, i know... but don't lie.... your curious and you want to try it too!
But it is a journal/sketchbook , so there are pages where you are forced to write about aspects of your life or drawing something ugly. So I ended up buying one for her and for myself! And I love it!!! So expect a random journal page one of these weeks.

And we decided that we would work on our journals in secret from each other, then when we were about half way finished we would send it to each other ( she lives in Florida) to look through and explain our pages over the phone.

I definitely recommend this book as a gift for your creative, sassy, emotional friend.

Cleveland Zoo

So this past weekend, the family took a trip to Cleveland Zoo with our most terrific friends Beth and Dwayne and their son Riley. And as I looked through the pictures from that outing I realized that we may possibly have THE cutest kids ever!

Anyway, even though I have a gazillion different monster and animal designs, I am constantly looking for new ideas, inspiration, etc. and what better place to look, than the zoo!

So since I gave most of my stock to Open Door Art Studio and Wholly Craft.. I have been trying to make more stock! So please come back to look for puppets, clippies, 2 new monster styles and new versions of the older stuff!

So I was shopping at Wholly Craft the other day and I saw a postcard/business card with this sweet little owl on it. I picked it up and realized it was a promo card for a new fabric shop in Columbus! Only 6 months old, this shop this shops seems to be doing really well!! When I visited for a looksy, I was greeted by Anita (the store owner) and her granddaughter. So cute, by the way. The bright, but classy decor of her store really compliments the gorgeous fabrics she has available.

I seriously could have bought everything in the store!

A Great Day

So yesterday was "Everything is going to suck for Lenny" day. Everything I tried was a terrible failure. At the end of the day on my way to the park with the baby bean, it rained. So i cried a little, brushed it off and tried to make the best of it. Ellie, Harv and I ended up staying outside and playing in the puddles. Eventually, it stopped raining and a huge rainbow emerged amidst the cloudy sky. At the risk of sounding like a teenage novel - I guess when you stay positive and don't dwell on the things that don't go your way... it will all be okay in the end.

Hello All!!

As you know the North market was this past Sunday. It was good, the money was decent and weather was warm but good too! Amy of Sweet Stella Designs has the space next to mine at the Market and we were brainstorming ideas for up-coming shows. That is always fun.

Powell fest

This Weekend was a Nightmare!!

Hi-ya everyone!
Well... This weekend was the Powell Festival. Wow. .. and not in a good way. First of all, the set-up time was ridiculous! They wanted us to be there to set up at least 5 HOURS before we were to open or else you had to park a mile away and carry your stuff from your car. Then no one was there to tell you where your assigned spot was. After 30 min of walking around the muddy grounds with my stuff, Someone told me that it was with an older gentleman on a green Gator. By the time I got to him he was on a rampage because vendors drove there cars to there tents after 11:oo AM anyway. Did I mention it was 100 degrees outside?
When I arrived to my assigned location I found that we were at least 4 car lengths away from any foot traffic. So to get to any of the art vendors you had to trek through a good inch of mud and wet grass. And as all artist and crafters know, location is very important. Yet the Target, City of Powell and Nationwide booths handing out who-knows-what ,were covered with people because they were placed along the paved walkway! We were set up for failure when we signed up for this thing!

Luckily, for our convenience Powell offered to rent us tents but did not mention that were not waterproof. So when the thunderstorms hit the tents were not only dripping but were collecting water in each corner. Unfortunately, when I attempted to dump the water from my tent, the water ended up spilling all over the front of my shirt and pants. Albeit, good for a laugh... PRobably not the most professional look :) At least not in this business.

I came back the next day with higher hopes and a positive attitude. Things went alright in the beginnng of the day but it really hurt us that were were placed in an area that no one could get too or would want to with a stroller, cane, or wheelchair. Sales were bad all around. Then the big storm hit. Luckily we packed up when we saw the dark clouds coming. Our tent was not in the ground very well and it was not weighted so we nearly lost it a few times.

I really am not the kind of person to complain about much, but if there are any fellow crafters and fine artist thinking of applying for the Powell Festival next year, reconsider it. A lot of vendors lost out on making some money this weekend and I would hate for a fellow vendor to go through what I went through.

I did,however, meet some really nice people and saw some really cute stuff.

Hey hey all!!
Okay, so I have been messing around with all kinds of new logo ideas. I wanted something sketch-booky and really reflects my child-like quirkiness AND I can use with all my products. SO! here are just some examples.. and the blue tags will be the mini books that go with my Storyteller line of plush creatures.

I am currently designing a new logo - something simple, colorful and childlike. It should be ready by next week. If you are in the Columbus, Ohio area please stop by and see me at the Powell festival on the 27th and 28th of this month (June) and the Artisans Market at the North Market every first Sunday of the month til October.
